Garrett is 4 Months Old

June 19, 2010

Garrett turned 4 months old Wed and we had his checkup Thursday. I though you all might to hear how he’s growing. He weighed in at 15 lbs 14 oz, which is the 75th percentile for his age (down from the 85th percentile last time). He is 25 1/2 inches long also in the 75th percentile (up from 50th percentile last time). His head circumfrence is 16 1/2 inches at 45th percentile (about the same).

Garrett is a busy little boy. He is very interested in toys and grabbing things. Last night I was holding him in my lap while eating rolls for dinner and he kept trying to grab my roll and eat it. He got pretty close a couple times. 🙂 He is very close to learning to roll over onto his tummy – he gets very close and just needs to learn to swing his legs over. He’s a very happy, smiley baby most of the time and so much fun!

Kalyn is doing great, as well. Right now she is very interested in insects. We often have a few ants exploring by our back door (we can’t seem to get rid of them but they’re really not a big problem – there’s hardly ever more than a handful) and she loves to pick them up and have them crawl on her hand. We have a community garden plot and she loves to see all the bugs while she is there. She also was in a “Curious Twos” class (a 1 hour class a couple times a week for 2 year old with art and songs and stuff) and the theme for the 2 weeks she was in was insects, so she had a lot of fun with that.

A Kite Festival & The National Grasslands

May 16, 2010

A few weeks ago Fort Collins had a genuine kite festival! It was a big success with lots of people. Tim had a ton of fun and met lots of other kite fliers. Kalyn flew her very first kite, which she made herself. In the video she is trying to make her kite do tricks like Daddy’s.

A couple weeks later we went to the Pawnee National Grasslands. We have never driven around grasslands before… and there was definitely a lot of grass. And cows. And not much else. We were going to do a little hike, but when we got there it was super windy and too cold, so we just took some pictures. We got to see the grasslands, though, which is why we went.

There are also some adorable pictures of my adorable children. Garrett continue to grow and get stronger all the time. He is a happy, active, and alert baby, just like his sister was. Kalyn is learning more and more and enjoys exploring her world. The last couple pictures are from Kalyn trying to put mascara on her face.

I hope you don’t get the idea from our pictures that we let Kalyn run amuck and do whatever she wants. It’s just, when she does something cute I want to preserve it for posterity, and for me because I will probably forget.

Garrett’s Awake

February 22, 2010

Here are some pictures of the little guy awake and looking around.  While Kalyn looks pretty much just like her Dad, Garrett seems to have inherited his looks more from his mother’s side of the family.  I’d love to hear who you think he looks like!

Garrett’s Doing Great!

February 22, 2010

This morning Garrett and I went in for our “Wee Steps” checkup where they weigh him and make sure everything is going good with breastfeeding.  Garrett greatly impressed the nurse as he has already gained back his birth weight and then some.  At birth he was 7lb 11oz, this morning he was 7lb 13.4oz.  He has been a great little eater.

These days Garrett is mostly sleeping and eating, but I’m going to try and get some good pictures one of these times he is awake and looking around. We think he is such a little cutie!

Also, since I’m posting I also just wanted to say how great it was to deliver at the Poudre Valley Hospital.  I made the comment earlier that if the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center is a baby factory, then PVH is a baby retreat! Probably the biggest difference was at UVRMC all the nurses seemed like they had way too much to do, while the nurses here seemed much less rushed and were constantly offering help.  Also, in labor and delivery at UVRMC we went through four different nurses, but at PVH they make a big deal of having a single nurse work with you in each shift. There’s also a lot of smaller stuff, like bigger rooms, better breastfeeding support, a real bed for dads, better meal system, etc.  I also appreciated how they brought all the tests into the room instead of taking the baby away – they really empahsize rooming in with the baby, which is great. I don’t mean to say that UVRMC is a bad hospital, but they are so busy that they emphasize efficiency much more than making things nice for mom.  It was really great to be able to relax and enjoy baby a little more while we were in the hospital.

Kalyn turned 2 on the 18th, but we are waiting to celebrate until all the grandparents are here on the 27th, so you can also expect to hear more about that in the future.

More Pics – Kalyn Meets her Brother

February 17, 2010

Kalyn met her new brother. She held the baby and was quite enthralled for all of about 3 minutes. Then she proudly announced “all done” and proceeded to explore the room. Jumping from the window sill onto the “daddy bed” was very entertaining and kept her going for quite a while.

Garrett Eli Wessman

February 16, 2010

Garrett Eli joined us at 9:03pm, February 16, 2010. He weighs 3.475kg and is 53.3cm in length.

Garrett is a fighter. He came out face down, and was kicking the doctor all the time. He then proceeded to urinate on all four of us (Katie, I, doctor and a nurse) with one burst. He was screaming for about 30 minutes and was very loud until Katie calmed him down.

His eyes aren’t wide open like Kalyn’s were, but he is definitely much louder. He has lighter and sparser hair than Kalyn did, but has more body hair. His Apgar is 9-9 which is very unusual around here due to altitude.

Katie delivered with no pain medication and “my bottom hurts”. Katie says she definitely feels better right now than last time, but is still undecided if it was worth going all natural.

They just delivered to us a celebratory bottle of Champagne which was quite surprising and very unexpected. That is certainly a little different from Provo! Knowing nothing about alcohol other than I don’t drink any, I couldn’t even tell you if it is a nice one or a $2 Walmart special. . .

I will probably put it on my cubicle shelf at work as a decoration.

It is starting!

February 16, 2010

Katie and I went into the doctor’s office just a bit ago. She woke up this morning with contractions continuing in the morning (which is not normal – usually they don’t start up until later in the day). They kept getting more painful, so at 330 she called the doctor. They told her to come in to check.

I made a guess of 10:30pm for this baby. At the doctor’s, they told her that she was 6cm dilated and 75% effaced.

Keep around for updates! We’ll probably have a new little one tonight.

No News is Good News… I Guess

February 11, 2010

If you’re wondering why we haven’t posted any updates about the baby’s arrival, it’s because there’s nothing to post! This morning we had a checkup and I still have not significantly dilated, despite having lots of contractions (when I say lots think about every 20 minutes or so, off an on for a few days). So, who knows when this baby will come! We certainly don’t.

I’m getting more than a little restless, although it’s hard to complain too much because I remember being a whole lot more uncomfortable at this point with Kalyn–mostly because we now have a good mattress instead of a DI special. So, at least I’m getting some sleep and I’m not hurting like I was last time!

Here is a little video to take your mind off how anxious we all are for baby to come:

Washing the Fishies

January 24, 2010

This evening I was enjoying a quiet moment on the computer when I had this sequence of thoughts: “It’s so nice to sit for a minute, I’m glad Kalyn is entertaining herself over there. In fact, she is being too quiet, that means she is probably up to something. I should probably look and see what she is up to. But it’s so nice to sit here in ignorance. Whatever it is can’t be that bad, I can see that she is right there. I’ll just sit here for another minute…”

When Kalyn started saying “Wash fishies” I knew I had to investigate, and this is what I found…

Fun With Photo Booth

January 22, 2010

Kalyn and I had fun playing with Photo Booth on my mac the other day, and I thought I’d share the results with you.

We haven’t been doing much fun and exciting stuff since I’m feeling very large and awkward and tired and etc. This pregnancy has been SO much easier than the last one, though, so I can’t complain too much. We’ll keep you posted on any updates on new baby.
