Christmas Kites

December 25, 2009

This year for family Christmas presents we made kites. We were talking about what to do for Christmas presents, and Tim said to me that he prefers to give homemade gifts.  I said that I was happy to make gifts, but this year I needed his help.  He then suggested we make kites for everyone, since that is something he enjoys.  Tim made some kites in high school, but hadn’t done any since then and never expected to be making kites with his wife. 🙂  We had a lot of fun making the kites together and we plan to keep making kites in the future.

Here are pictures of all the kites we made, as well as us making and testing some of the kites.  I did help make the kites, too, but I was always the one taking the pictures.  There wasn’t a whole lot of wind when we tested the kites, so Tim had to run around the park.  We weren’t able to get any pictures of the spinsock in action, but this video should give you an idea of what it looks like when it’s going, even though the one we made isn’t quite so massive.

Trick Or Treat

October 31, 2009

Yesterday morning Kalyn and I went trick or treating at the Tiny Tot Halloween celebration in downtown Fort Collins.  The businesses there handed out candy to the little kids who came to celebrate. We had a lot of fun and afterwards Kalyn and I stopped for lunch.

Then, yesterday afternoon, HP had a trick or treat for all of the kids and grandkids of employees.  Employees brought candy and we went from cubicle to cubicle.  Most people just let the kids self-serve their candy, so she got pretty good at picking up a piece of candy and putting it in her bag. She had a lot of fun and got a ton of candy.

At one cubicle someone had a bowl with a hand that would move when you grabbed candy.  This scared Kalyn quite a bit and for the rest of the time anytime there was something next to the bowl she would get nervous.  In the video you can see her get scared of a bowl someone set up.  We thought it was quite cute.

Big Snow Storm

October 30, 2009

We had a big snow storm the past couple days.  In the end I think we got about a foot and a half of snow.  This was a lot more snow than last time, which was maybe a few inches.  Kalyn had a lot of fun playing in the snow for a while.  She enjoyed climbing around and jumping in the snow (which came up to just below her hips) as well as eating it.  The second to last picture is meant to show how tired she was after climbing around in the snow for a while, and the very last picture is the view out our back door and gives you an idea of how much snow we got.

Since Kalyn has moved to a big girl bed, she often gets out of bed and plays for a little while before she goes to sleep.  Most of the time she will climb back into bed by herself before going to sleep. But, the other day I went in to check on her and couldn’t open the door.  I looked under the door and this is what I saw! She woke up again about 15 minutes later and climbed back into bed for the rest of her nap.

Tim’s Birthday

October 28, 2009

It was Tim’s birthday last Friday! We celebrated by making cards and cookies.  (Tim didn’t want a cake, mostly because once we make a big cake we have to eat it all before it goes funny, so we made sugar cookies since they last longer and aren’t quite as fattening.)  We are so grateful for Tim, who is such a great husband and daddy!

The condo where we live is back in the corner and surrounded by trees.  We love the trees because they give us shade and make the area quite pretty.  It also means we’ve had tons and tons of leaves.  Kalyn enjoys playing in the big piles of leaves in our yard.

Pumpkin Patch

October 28, 2009

We went to the pumpkin patch with the ward playgroup a little bit ago. Kalyn had a lot of fun climbing on the hay bales and seeing the animals.  We went back with Tim about a week later and bought the pumpkins we carved. It’s a great little pumpkin patch with no admission but lots of fun things for the little kids.

First Snow

October 28, 2009

We had our first snow a couple weeks ago. We decided to go sledding, and so set off on a sled hunt, but nobody was stocking sleds yet. We went to the park anyway and a nice family let us borrow a sled to go down a couple times. Kalyn enjoyed the snow and sledding and wanted to go again right away!

Callaway Kite Festival

September 19, 2009

Just a few days before Labor Day weekend we heard about a big kite festival that takes place about 6 hours from here in Nebraska and decided to go.  We are so glad we went because we had a ton of fun. We camped out the whole time and got to see and fly a ton of kites.  Tim also got a nice break, since he has been frustrated with wind here (there’s either none or way too much).  We plan on making it a tradition to keep going as long as we live close enough.

Callaway itself is a tiny town (if you can even a call a town without any kind of grocery store a “town”) in the middle of farmland in Nebraska.  It’s actually quite a pretty area, even if it was pretty desolate as far as people are concerned. They have got one big thing going for them, though: lots and lots of steady wind.

Rocky Mountain National Park

September 19, 2009

Rocky Mountain National Park is only about an hour’s drive from our new home, so this past week we decided to go up and check it out.  We had a lot of fun and it was fascinating to be on top of the mountains.  For lunch we stopped at a picnic area and Kalyn had the time of her life with the animals there.  There were a ton of ducks, probably the most tame ducks I have ever seen.  Also, Kalyn got especially excited about the ground squirrel.  Kalyn still loves all animals, and is having a blast learning about new animals all the time, so it was pretty much the highlight of the month for her.
