FHE at the Pet Store

August 26, 2008

For FHE we decided to take the baby to the pet store.  We are probably going to be moving sometime this week, so the baby was able to find a baby sized house.  She enjoyed seeing so many fish in the tanks.  Her favorite thing was definitely the parakeets.  She really got excited seeing them fly around.  She was also fascinated by the rats and all of the pet toys.   It was a fun evening.

Would You Call This Crawling?

August 20, 2008

Thanks in part to the marvelous coaching efforts of Eliza and Anna this weekend, Kalyn can now scoot herself forward across the floor as seen in this video.

So, the question is, does this count as crawling? She is not up off the ground, but she is definitely as mobile as any crawler, although a bit slow using this method. Tell us what you think in the comments.

On a side note, so that the grandmas don’t go and get worried, we wouldn’t normally let her just play with keys, especially Tim’s keys she is after in the video. But, she finds keys utterly fascinating and they are the perfect motivator for a cross-room journey.

Six Month Checkup

August 20, 2008

Kalyn had her six month checkup yesterday.  She is 15lbs 1oz and 26 1/4 inches long.  She is around the 30th percentile for weight and head size, but 70th percentile for length.  I’m thinking she’s going to end up tall.

Fun in Weiser

August 18, 2008

This past weekend we were able to visit with lots of family in Weiser, Idaho.  We stayed with my grandparents, Fern and Bud Panike.  We also were able to visit with my dad, Rita, Ben, Anna, Eliza, as well as Uncle Chris, Aunt Linda, Uncle Greg, and Aunt Connie.  It was fun seeing everybody and visiting.  It has been a very long time since I got to visit with both of my siblings who are around (my other brother Erick is coming home from his mission next month!) and I got to meet Anna, my brother’s girlfriend, and Rita, my dad’s girlfriend.  I guess technically I have “met” Anna before (they’ve been dating for years) but not spend any time together. It was great to just hang out and visit.  Kalyn, of course, was the life of the party.

The last few pictures are of Shoshone Falls, which we stopped to see on our way to visit Tim’s sister Rebekah and her husband Lance.  We were able to have dinner and spend the night with them, which was fun and made the drive home easier on us and the baby.

Overnight Campout

August 18, 2008

The same day we went to Dancesport we also went for an overnight campout at Payson Lakes Campground in the Mount Nebo area.  It is always so relaxing to go camping, and we really have the overnight campout down.  Kalyn seems to enjoy getting out and seeing new things and is not big enough yet to get into things she shouldn’t.

Dancing With the Babies

August 18, 2008

A couple weeks ago we got to babysit Dylan, son of our friends Jill and Garrett, while they competed in summer dancesport.  We had fun watching the dance competition and playing “twins.”  Dylan is about 3 months younger than Kalyn, so it was also fun to see him growing and remembering when Kalyn used to be that small all of 3 months ago.  🙂  Also, we got some cute pictures.

Six Months Old

August 18, 2008

Kalyn is six months old today.  It is amazing how fast time goes by!

She is still a very active baby.  She loves to explore her world.  She is very good at getting around by rolling.  She also is now also able to scoot forward.

Kalyn also is great at grabbing things.  She is able to pick up both big and small things, which means I really have to be on the watch when she is rolling about.  She can do both the whole fist grip and the pincer grip with her thumb and pointer finger.

She loves people.  She enjoys watching people and interacting with them.  She is usually quite happy around large groups of people, especially if they are giving her their attention.

She also is starting to babble quite a bit.  Her cute little baby noises are fun.  She also likes to make a high pitched screechy noise quite a bit.  It is cute, but can be a problem when we’re in church or somewhere where people might not find her noises quite so cute.

Kalyn is also getting better at sleeping again.  Yea!  She takes two regular naps each day and goes to bed with just a little fussing. She still wakes up a couple time, but the length of time between waking keeps getting longer (except when we’re not at home, but she still did pretty good this past weekend at Grandma Panike’s house).

Kalyn also has been eating solid food.  She loves rice cereal, and just today she ate oatmeal for the first time and really likes that.  She has hated everything else we feed her, which includes peas, carrots, peaches, and apples.  It is quite funny to see her face when you try to slip a little bit of fruit or vegetables in with her cereal.  We’ll keep trying, though.

Kalyn enjoys exploring all kind of things. It is funny that she will put just about anything in her mouth except for fruits and vegetables.  Today we let her play in the grass for a little bit and while she was a little unsure at first she started to put her fingers through the grass and look around.  She is always very determined in her explorations and doesn’t give up easily when she’s got it in her head to go get something.

We are looking forward to Kalyn continuing to grow and develop.  She is so much fun and so cute to see!
